Artek Reintroduces Armchair 45 alongside classic Aalto tables and lamps
Since its founding in 1935, Artek has been dedicated to creating interiors that blend function with artistic expression. In line with this philosophy, Artek has introduced “Crafted Through Time,” a collection of furniture and lighting that celebrates the depth of multi-layered spaces. This collection includes special editions, reinterpretations, and beloved classics, all reflecting Artek's commitment to crafting interiors that are full of character and personal significance. These products seamlessly complement various environments, enriching spaces with their blend of materials and timeless design.
Available on artek.fi from September 5, Artek has unveiled updated versions of classic furniture products designed by Alvar Aalto, including the reintroduction of Armchair 45 to the Artek collection. The chair was originally designed by Alvar Aalto in 1947 and brings warmth and refinement to contemporary interiors. The chair is versatile, fitting effortlessly around a dining table, behind a desk, or as a centrepiece in a living area.
The A110 "Hand Grenade" and A333 "Turnip" pendant lights have been reinterpreted with a new duotone “linen” colourway. Sculptural in form, these lights have an aesthetic appeal whether switched on or off, linking back to Aino Aalto and her pursuit of aesthetic beauty in every aspect of interior design. Drawing on her extensive travels and a keen eye for design, “Crafted Through Time” reflects her belief in using natural materials and mixing different styles to create comfortable living spaces. Aino's visionary work can be seen in the eclectic interiors of Villa Mairea in Finland and Helsinki’s Savoy restaurant, both are now viewed as modernist masterpieces and remind us how her ideas are still relevant today. Aino's approach to interiors and meticulous attention to detail continue to inspire Artek’s mission.
Armchair 45
available via Suite NY from September 5 starting at $2,700
Made entirely from natural materials, crafted details complement the lightweight design of Armchair 45. The Finnish birch frame is upholstered in quilted leather for ultimate comfort or natural linen webbing for more informal and relaxed settings. The versatility of Armchair 45 and its potential for commercial use in dining areas, meeting rooms, and workspaces was demonstrated by Alvar Aalto who often used a leather-upholstered version in his Tiilimäki studio, as seen in many archival photographs.
Aalto Table Round 91 walnut stain & Aalto Table Rectangular 83 walnut stain
The Aalto table is now available with a walnut stain that adds depth to an interior scheme. The Aalto Table Round 91 and Aalto Table Rectangular 83 feature a richly shaded oak veneer top, radiating warmth to a dining room and accommodating four and six guests, respectively. These products are adaptable and suitable for various environments, such as entrance areas or living spaces. The special finish perfectly complements the walnut-stained version of Armchair 45.
A110 “Hand Grenade” / A333 “Turnip” in duotone “linen” colourway
The A110 “Hand Grenade” and A333 “Turnip” pendant lights are now available in a new “linen” colour, which is inspired by the vintage textile lampshades that have been a part of Artek's furniture collection over the years. The contrast between the upper and lower parts of the lights enhances the soft, indirect light that is characteristic of Aalto interiors. These lights have a sculptural quality and feature details like a perforated brass rim that distributes light in multiple directions, creating a natural light effect.
About Artek
Artek was founded in Helsinki in 1935 by four young idealists: Aino and Alvar Aalto, Maire Gullichsen, and Nils-Gustav Hahl. Their goal was “to sell furniture and to promote a modern culture of living by exhibitions and other educational means.” In keeping with the radical spirit of its founders, Artek remains an innovative player in the world of modern design to this day, developing new products at the intersection of design, architecture and art. The Artek collection consists of furniture, lighting and accessories designed by Finnish masters and leading international designers. It stands for clarity, functionality and poetic simplicity.
